Berau DPRD Highlights Increasing Cases of Sexual Violence, Six Cases Occurred at the Beginning of the Year

BERAU – Based on data collected by the Women and Children Protection Unit (PPA) of the Berau Police, six cases of violence were recorded in January 2025 alone. This also received attention from Member of Commission I of the Berau DPRD, Peri Kombong.

According to him, the number of 6 cases of violence that occurred at the beginning of this year is a signal that prevention and handling efforts in Berau Regency are not yet optimal.

Therefore, he urged the relevant Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD), especially those dealing with social issues and child protection, to be more proactive in prevention and handling efforts.

He also emphasized the importance of concrete programs that include public education and assistance for victims of violence.

“OPD must have a concrete program, both in terms of public education and victim assistance. Don’t let cases like this continue to increase,” he said.

In addition, he also highlighted the important role of parents in providing attention to children as the main line of protection.

Parents should be sensitive to their children’s needs and feelings and ensure they grow up in a safe and healthy environment,” he explained.

He emphasized that cases of violence against children and women are not just about numbers, but also concern the future of the younger generation and human rights. For that, he asked for concrete steps from various parties to create a safe and comfortable environment for the people of Bumi Batiwakkal.

“Parents should not let go of supervising their children. Pay attention to them, both inside and outside the house,” he added.

Furthermore, he also appealed to the public not to hesitate to report if there are family members or children who experience violence, especially sexual violence. He hopes that law enforcement officers will give heavy punishment to perpetrators of violence so that it can provide a deterrent effect.

“Law enforcement officers must be able to give severe punishments to serve as a deterrent,” he concluded . (srn/dez)
